Why is the result what it is?

This ranking sorts the 5,571 Brazilian municipalities by day length, the time between sunrise and sunset, for the Brasília date shown above. Today the shortest day is in Uiramutã (RR) with 12h 03min of daylight, against 12h 07min in 50th place (Primavera (PA)). Between the longest day (Chuí (RS), 12h 29min) and the shortest (Uiramutã (RR), 12h 03min) in the country there are 26 minutes of difference. By state, the list has: Pará (18), Roraima (15) and Amapá (15).

Why? Day length depends almost entirely on latitude and the time of year. Brazil lies on both sides of the Equator, and the Earth's axis is tilted by about 23.4°, so the hemisphere leaning toward the Sun gets longer days. Today that is the southern side of the country, and the farther a city is from the Equator in that direction (Chuí (RS) is at 33.7°S), the longer its day. The opposite end of the country, Uiramutã (RR) (4.6°N), is the one that loses daylight. Near the Equator the day is always close to 12 hours, which is why equatorial cities hardly move in this ranking over the year.

Unlike the sunrise and sunset rankings, day length does not depend on the time zone or on longitude: Fernando de Noronha, Acre and the rest of the country are compared fairly because only the interval between the two events matters. The ranking changes every day and reverses around the equinoxes, when the southern and northern extremes swap places; at the June and December solstices the contrast is at its peak, and Brazil's far south has the most daylight of the whole country in summer (December) and the least in winter (June). The southernmost municipality in the dataset is Chuí (RS) and the northernmost is Uiramutã (RR), the two ends of the classic "from Oiapoque to Chuí".

Time zones and day length

Day length is the same on any clock, so time zones do not affect this ranking. The "Sunrise" and "Sunset" columns are shown in the local time of each city (Fernando de Noronha uses UTC−2, most of the country UTC−3, the Center-West and Amazonas UTC−4 and Acre UTC−5).

Frequently asked questions

Which Brazilian city has the shortest day today?

Uiramutã (RR) has the shortest day among the 5,571 municipalities today, with 12h 03min of daylight (sunrise at 05:47, sunset at 17:51). The 50th place has 12h 07min.

And at the other extreme?

At the opposite end of the list is Chuí (RS) with 12h 29min (longest day). The gap between the two extremes today is 26 minutes.

Does day length depend on the time zone?

No. Day length is the interval between sunrise and sunset, so it is the same on any clock. It depends on latitude and on the date: today it ranges from 12h 03min to 12h 29min across Brazil.

Where does Brasília (DF) rank today?

The capital ranks 2,457th of 5,571 in this list, with a day of 12h 16min. Brasília lies at 15.8°S, 47.9°W.

Does this ranking change over the year?

Yes. It is recalculated every day for the Brasília date (2026-10-03). The order of the cities shifts with the seasons because the Sun moves between the hemispheres, and with the equation of time, a small seasonal drift of solar noon of up to about 16 minutes.

How are the times calculated?

With astronomical formulas (NOAA algorithm) applied to the coordinates of each municipality, using the Sun's center at 0.833° below the horizon, which includes atmospheric refraction and the Sun's radius. Terrain, altitude and local weather are not considered, so published times can differ by a minute or two.
