Hours calculator: add, subtract and calculate work hours

Add and subtract hours and minutes, calculate the hours worked in a day and your overtime balance, and convert between decimal hours and hh:mm. Everything is calculated in your browser.

1. Add and subtract hours

Enter one duration per line in hh:mm format. Put - before a value to subtract it.

2. Hours worked and overtime balance

3. Convert decimal hours and hh:mm

How the calculator works

Each time is converted to minutes, the values are added or subtracted, and the result is shown again in hours and minutes, plus decimal hours (for example, 8h30 equals 8.5 hours). In the work hours calculation, if the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift is assumed to have crossed midnight. The balance shows how many hours more or less you worked compared with the daily target.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add hours and minutes?

Enter one duration per line in hh:mm format (for example 08:30). The total is shown in hours and minutes and also in decimal hours. To subtract, put a minus sign before the value.

How do I calculate hours worked?

Enter your start time, lunch out, lunch back and end time. The calculator adds the two work periods and compares them with the daily target to show your overtime balance.

How do I convert 7.5 hours to hours and minutes?

Multiply the decimal part by 60: 0.5 hour is 30 minutes, so 7.5 hours equals 7h30. The calculator converts in both directions.

What if the shift ends after midnight?

If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift crossed midnight and adds 24 hours.
