Understanding Brasília time
When someone says “Brasília time”, they mean Brazil’s official time: UTC-3, three hours behind Coordinated Universal Time. Television, banks, the stock exchange, domestic flights and legal deadlines all run on this clock. Because Brazil is huge, not every state shares it: Amazonas, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rondônia and Roraima are one hour behind Brasília, Acre is two hours behind, and the island of Fernando de Noronha is one hour ahead.
Brazil has had no daylight saving time since 2019, so the gaps between Brazilian time zones are fixed all year. For countries that move their clocks, such as the United States, Portugal and most of Europe, the difference from Brasília changes twice a year, which is exactly why it pays to check the current time before scheduling a call or meeting.

Frequently asked questions
What is Brasília time?
Brasília time (BRT) is the official time of Brazil, UTC-3, three hours behind Coordinated Universal Time. It applies to most of the country, including Brasília, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Bahia and the whole Northeast coast.
Does Brazil have daylight saving time?
No. Brazil abolished daylight saving time by federal decree in 2019; the last period ended in February 2019. Since then Brazilian clocks stay the same all year.
How many time zones does Brazil have?
Four: UTC-2 (Fernando de Noronha and other oceanic islands), UTC-3 (Brasília time), UTC-4 (Amazonas, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rondônia and Roraima) and UTC-5 (Acre and southwestern Amazonas).
What is the time difference between Brazil and New York?
1 hour behind Brasília right now. Because the US changes its clocks and Brazil does not, the gap moves between one and two hours during the year.
What is the time difference between Brazil and London?
4 hours ahead of Brasília right now. The gap changes by one hour when the UK moves its clocks in March and October.
